History of the Home

I learn from Scholz and Boyle that the installation of a new HVAC system, especially for a historic site, involves years of planning. In 2012, research funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities allowed staff at Dumbarton to study different HVAC options. By 2016, they had decided on a geothermal system, a popular choice for historic sites due to its non-invasive nature. Pipes are installed underground that liquid is then pumped through to cool and heat a building.

Dumbarton hired their Fall 2015 Collections Intern, Allison LaCroix, who measured and assessed all 3,400 objects, ensuring that each would fit perfectly inside their custom boxes. I'm not a collections specialist, but I know that fracturing a circa 1840 Staffordshire wash basin or misplacing a letter from Joseph Nourse (who moved to Dumbarton House in 1804) would be a significant loss. The obsessive amount of attention paid toward the collection is pretty clear that the staff take the renovations seriously.

Other vendors in Washington DC for your wedding

Treasury, and his wife Maria, made their home here, between 1804 and 1813. The first floor of the home is decorated and furnished to reflect their tastes, and the early history of Washington and Georgetown. In addition to our first floor period rooms, our second floor galleries include special exhibits around the history of D.C. Situated in Washington DC, Dumbarton House is an elegant venue for weddings and other events. Couples and their loved ones can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this property which is rich in charm and elegance.

Since 1932, Dumbarton House has operated as a museum, modeling life in Georgetown in the early Federal period.

In 1928, it was purchased by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, who restored the house in such a way as to represent life in Georgetown in the early Federal period. In 1932 when Dumbarton House first opened, it was furnished with donated pieces dating generally to the revolutionary and federal periods (1790s through 1820), although occasionally earlier and sometimes later. The house is currently undergoing reinstallation and refurnishing to more accurately reflect the years of the Nourse residence (1804–13). In 2006, the Dumbarton House Board commissioned an in-depth study of the Nourses' furnishings and decorative style.

A short film explores the history and mission of the NSCDA and its National Headquarters at Dumbarton House. But in September of 2016, Dr. Jerry Foust, collections and facilities manager, was disheartened to learn that their well-calculated budget for the installation had increased 300%. After going back to the drawing board, the team decided on a VRV/VRF (Variable Refrigerant Volume/Flow) system. In this system, air handlers are placed throughout a building and operate on the same loop. It can easily adjust to the climate, making it more efficient than some other systems.

The refurbishment of historic Glencairn House, on the town’s High Street, which will see the iconic building overhauled into a state-of-the-art facility, has now begun marking a brand new chapter for Dumbarton. The following overview lists the visiting hours for Dumbarton House in Los Angeles. Please note that opening hours on special days or holidays may differ from what is displayed here.

History Lessons

They gave the government 10 years to complete the move and establish the infrastructure for the new city, to be named after the first President, George Washington. The location of the capital had moved between Philadelphia and New York and nothing guaranteed it would stay in DC. This exhibit tells the story of some of the people, politicians, craftsmen, and others who made the city home and how it came to be. It will also create new and exciting opportunities for the local community and visitors to the area to engage with, explore and learn more about the collections. The ambitious plans for Glencairn House will include the construction of a three-storey extension to create extra space to house the library and museum. In the early years of the new nation, the idealized classical ages of Greece and Rome provided inspiration in forging the identity of the American Republic.

Dumbarton House (National Society of the Colonial Dames of America; Bellevue)

Dumbarton House serves as the headquarters of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, a female genealogical organization established in 1891. In 1928, the NSCDA purchased the house and opened the site as a museum in 1932 to further their mission of preservation, patriotism, and education. We then proceed to the oldest part of the house to look at the museum space.

Preserving the built environment - including buildings, landscapes, and archaeological sites - is a way to remember and learn from the past. Throughout the country as well as in Washington, DC, women often initiated preservation efforts. The Dumbarton House, located in Georgetown, is one example of women preserving historic sites in the capital city. Dumbarton House has various event spaces, the largest with a capacity of 200 people.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate. Handicapped parking is available in our parking lot, located off 27th Street, just north of Q Street. Dumbarton House is committed to promoting the use of sustainable transportation as a way to reduce local traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.

With this number of attendees, couples can exchange vows in The North Garden, an outdoor area designed in 1932 with beautifully manicured lawns and a stunning red-brick arbor. Outdoor receptions can take place in The Belle Vue Room and Lower Courtyard which accommodates 140 guests for a standing reception and 80 for seated events. This elegant area with indoor and outdoor spaces boasts 13-foot ceilings and Palladian-style windows for a truly sophisticated feel. Lastly, The Upper Terrace also accommodates 60 guests overlooking the scenic East Park. Each and all of these event areas have breathtaking views for photographs and provide ample space for entertaining. There is also a get-ready-suite for the nearlyweds to prepare in, while up to 75 of their guests at a time peruse the museum.

Instead of artifacts, there are office furniture and books stacked on top of each other in the middle of one room. I notice the nine-over-nine windows, which were reinstalled a short time ago. Christian Kelleher from The Craftsman Group, Inc. removed the windows and brought them to his workspace in Maryland where he steamed them to remove the glazing and paint before carefully re-glazing them.

You can book reservations online or by phone, but advance tickets are not required. If you are reserving free tickets, we can only allow you to reserve them for one time slot per day. In addition, a standalone children’s library pavilion will be created at the back of the building, opening out onto a library garden centred on the existing tree which will become the garden’s ‘storytelling tree’. As well as dedicated spaces for children and families, it will provide access to computers, quiet study areas and relaxed meetings spaces. Dumbarton House hosts a regular schedule of virtual and in-person public programs including concerts, lectures, performances, tastings, and family-oriented activities.

In 1813, the Nourses sold the house, and within a few years they moved to the current site of the National Cathedral on upper Wisconsin Avenue. The Nourses’ son, Charles, built his mansion, The Highlands, just north of that, and it now serves as the administration building of the Sidwell Friends School. When you enter Dumbarton House you are welcomed with bright light from a large Palladian window gracing the stairway landing at the rear of the central passage. Upstairs, the south-facing front windows rise dramatically from the floor, flooding the front rooms with light. No longer content with boxy spaces, Dumbarton House’s designer added a pair of great rounded bow walls to the rear of the house, extending the back rooms with gracious, curved spaces.

The venue has both indoor and outdoor event areas for joyous celebrations year-round. To-be-weds can work with the dedicated events team to plan their special day in this beautiful red-brick home and gardens. We’re happy to partner with neighboring historic sites and organizations to enhance cultural life in the Washington, D.C. This new facility will, for the first time, enable access to the stored objects and documents in West Dunbartonshire’s heritage collections.
